web site translations
|
|
- Download site
or portion of site to be translated. Provide quote.
- Localize. Client
specifies what elements are to be localized: Measurements
to metric? Currency? Phone and fax numbers with international
dialing codes or with local numbers? Add translation of
USA to address? Reverse dates? Set up links to search engines
in other countries? (Links must be set up to the various
languages.)
- Establish glossary.
Set up initially, then revise along with the updates.
- Translate text.
Process involves sending text to translator in target country
specified by client, sending translated text to an equally
qualified proofreader and doing a final quality check in
house.
- Translate graphics.
Get files for imbedded text. Find out what format was used.
- Deliver in HTML
format or Visual Basic, JavaScript? Need URL code? FTP for
uploading?
- Update
using translation memory software (Trados). A translation
memory (TM) system basically consists of a database system
in which each source sentence of a translation is stored
together with the target sentence (one TM unit). Any new
source sentences will be searched for in the TM, and a match
value is calculated. In case the match value is 100% (i.e.,
a perfect match), the translation of the source sentence
from the database is inserted into the document. If the
match value is below 100% and above a certain user-definable
percentage (e.g., 50%) the (old) translation will be inserted
as translation proposal. Sentences with match values below
that margin have to be translated from scratch. New and
changed translation proposals will then be stored in the
TM for further use.
- A good TM system
will allow users to search the database for all sentences
in which a word or a phrase occurs. In this case, the TM
becomes a valuable source of information for fellow translators
working on the same project and for subsequent updates of
a project.
- Translate additional
features: Q&A, e-mail submit information, etc
