What are the qualifications a translator should have?

An 8-point check list:

1 Native speaker, perfectly bilingual
2 University-educated
3 One who remains active in use of native language
4 Specialist in the subject being translated
5 Minimum of 10 years experience in translation
6 Active in the publication of documents in mother tongue
7 Willing to have qualifications verified and to provide references
8 Well-versed in computer technology

What is involved in choosing a translator?

Besides availability and equipment, there is no way to check out abilities other than by testing.

What about certification?

There is accreditation from the American Translators Association, but it is far from a valid test for any kind of advanced-level or in-depth translating. This job must be fully assumed by the translation agency, which puts the time and effort into finding the most qualified people for the job.

How can you be sure the translator working on your project is qualified?

The agency should be happy to provide you with the translator’s qualifications.

What about mechanical translation?

Various types of software on the market now allow you to translate documents fast and at low cost. They can translate approximately 90% (maximum) of a basic, non-technical text. However, a mechanical translator will not do the following:

  • give you a document ready for publication
  • give you an accurate translation of a technical manual
  • give you a translation using colloquial expressions
  • give you a finished product

What Amerolink Offers

We have an established network of translators and proofreaders strategically located around the world. Approximately 70% of them reside in the country of the target language.*

*Target language: The language translated "into" (Source language: The one translated "from")

We screen prospective translators through sample text testing, checking references, verifying diplomas, etc.

At Amerolink we have found that it takes many applicants to produce a translator qualified to work for our agency.

All of our
translators meet the requirements of the 8-point check list.
